About Stroud & District Clay Club

History of clay shooting at the ground

Shooting on the ground started in 1969; just some old traps and a few locals. Tony Webb was one of the founder members along with the owner of the land John French. Tony had some manual Bowman traps, fixed to the back of an old lorry. He also had a tower erected at the one end of the ground so they could do some sporting driven clays.
The club house was the back of an old container lorry, still used to store equipment. Then the first skeet layout was put in and the ground became a CPSA Registered ground.
A second Skeet layout was installed and then a DTL layout. Tony Webb then sold the club onto Mark Mills and Brian Baxter. Brian later ran the club on his own for 20 years, until I took over 10 years ago. It is one of the oldest Clay grounds in Gloucestershire, probably the country.
